1. Watch free lessons to see if the drums are a good fit for you.

Before you purchase your first drum set, it's a good idea to take a moment to see if learning the drums is a good fit for you. This is easily done thanks to the wonders of the internet. You're already here, so why not check out our free lessons? You'll also find great content on YouTube if you are willing to spend the time scrolling through countless child prodigies, drumming animals, and even people playing with burning drum sticks - but we think you'll like our thoughtful, step-by-step approach. After all, our curriculum is based on over 20 years of teaching experience.

2. Choose your instrument. Electric, acoustic, or no drums at all?

There's no doubt that the biggest objection to learning the drums is the fear of upsetting the household or the neighbors as they enjoy sipping tea peacefully in their garden. As a domestic diplomat and an all-around good neighbor, you've probably already thought of that. The good news is that electronic drum sets have never been better value, and if you prefer to play acoustic drums, there are several sound-reduction solutions for those too. Your chosen instrument will depend on your circumstances, and we recommend reading this article for further guidance. Also, if you want to experiment without making any purchasing decisions, it is entirely possible to develop rhythm with no drum set at all. As a rockstar air drummer, you may already know this.

3. Take online drum lessons, or visit a local teacher.

Our first free lesson will give you the tools to start playing along to songs with a basic drum beat, but eventually, you will need some structure and guidance to develop your new skills. Watching video lessons is a great way to learn because you can learn on your terms, go at your own pace, and review the information as often as you need. Our videos have multiple camera angles and even on-screen music notation. Once we get back to post-Covid life and you have a good understanding of the basics, working with a local drum teacher is also a good idea. While studio lessons may not be an option right now due to the pandemic, some teachers offer Zoom lessons, which can be worthwhile, providing you are ok with the possible limitations of these types of sessions.

4. Set aside regular practice time.

You don't have to spend hours every day to make progress on the drums. We recommend 15-20 minutes of focused practice per day (or every other day), working on the basics that you will find in our early videos. You'll get plenty of guidance on what to practice and how to set a comfortable and productive learning pace. It's ok to sit at your drums and jam out too. We highly recommend it! We call this noodling, and it's essential to have a good balance of focused practice and noodling. Keeping this adventure fun is key to long-term success!

5. Jam along to songs.

Playing along to music is super fun and probably why you are considering drumming in the first place! In our videos, we give you the tools to start playing along to your favorite songs quickly. You don't have to play the song exactly as it was recorded, and just playing a basic but comfortable beat to your favorite tunes is a great way to unwind and have fun. At Drum Ambition, we have all of the basic types of grooves and drum fills covered, and you'll be rocking out in no time if you follow our structured and perfectly-paced program.
